Bridgeport, NJ – Bridgeport’s Doug Rose again beat the odds and delivered a full Friday night event on the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile sponsored by AllState Auto Glass. Spirit was the only track in the Tri-State area to get their show in on Friday night.
Connor Gross and Nick Skias became the first repeat winners in the Hyper Racing 600s and the 270 Micro Sprints, respectively. Jonathan Laureigh and David Morrison both became three time feature winners in the Speedway Entertainment All Star Slingshots and Junior Slingshots while Dylan Evans raced to the win in the Modified Lite feature event.
The Hyper Racing 600 feature saw Steven Snyder, Jr. lead the field to the green but it was Connor Gross with his CPG powered No. 14 who raced by Snyder to take the lead on the first lap. Several complete restarts were needed to score that first lap but Gross led the way on all occasions. By lap five, opening night winner, Quinn Llewellyn was racing his way through the top five, catching up to Snyder to challenge for second. There was a tremendous battle being fought for fifth among drivers like Geordan Marrer=ro, PJ Williams, defending champion, Anthony Tramontana and multi-time champion, Matt Smith.
Llewellyn raced by Snyder and then took the lead from Gross on a lap ten restart. Gross would explain later that he had made several changes to the car during the caution and had to revert to his original settings after losing the lead. Llewellyn led through lap fourteen with Gross applying pressure to regain the lead. Gross went to the inside on lap fifteen to take over the lead over Llewellyn, Snyder, Matt Peck and Brett Conkling.
Conkling came to a stop on the next lap, ending his top five run. Gross was able to distance himself from Llewellyn and Snyder while Peck and PJ Williams battled all the way to the checkered for fourth.
Gross took the win over Llewellyn, Snyder, Peck and Williams. Marrero finished sixth over Smith, Sam LaMothe, Tramontana and Julian Rexrode.
Nick Skias drew the pole for the 270 Micro Sprint feature event and led every lap for his second “w” of the season. Not a fan of starting on the pole, Skias admitted that it was alright when “it turned out like this,” Often, drivers feel like sitting ducks when they start on the pole and have no idea where anyone is running behind them.
Skias held off the challenges of defending champion, Alex Swift. Tyler Grau, also challenged Skias for the lead before being sidelined with mechanical issues just five laps from the finish.
Skias’ second win came over Swift, Luke Fogg, Logan Diehl and Jake Gent. Fogg and Diehl battled for many laps with Fogg taking third at the checkered.
John Maurer, Jake LeRoy, Mark Landwher, Cole Wyers and Ian John completed the top ten at the finish.
Gary Bozowski and Austin Walls led the field of All Star Slingshots to the start. Walls took the lead as a four car battled loomed behind the leader for second. Walls led the first four laps through several cautions but Jonathan Laureigh became the new leader on lap five.
Christopher Laureigh raced his way into second by lap ten after being involved in an early race incident.
No one was a match for the No. 74 as Laureigh pulled away from the field to take his third win in four races. His brother, Christopher Laureigh finished second – the only other winner in this division. Walls was a strong third followed by Charley Moore and Scott Philipp.
David Morrison drew the pole for the start of the Junior Slingshot feature and then led every lap on the way to his third win of the season.
Hannah Kormann held off all challengers to finish second over Waylon Wolf, Logan Showers and Anna Strachko. Tyler O’Neal finished sixth followed by Carl Taylor, Khloe Dennis, Bradley Dennis and Jack Brey.
Eighteen Junior Slingshots were on hand for Friday night’s actions. The Taylor family offered two additional incentives to show their appreciation for the concern and support given to Carl following a recent racing accident. Nate Kampe was the recipient of the Hard Luck award while Bradley Dennis received the Hard Charger award.
For the first time in many years, the Modified Lites came to the Spirit quarter mile and they put on quite a show. They quickly found speed as they found the fastest way around the banked track.
Dylan Evans was the winner of the feature event and the additional awards offered by Rivera’s Construction and McKinney 24/7 Road Service LLC. Ryan McKinney led the first lap before Evans took over on lap two and led all the way to the checkered. Trevor Collins finished second followed by McKinney, Tim White and Angel Rivera.
Friday night returns to the Spirit quarter mile on Friday as the Stage One Modifieds join the 600 ad 270 Micro Sprints and the All Star and Junior Slingshots.
