Bridgeport, NJ – He’s been close on many occasions. He’s been in the thick of the hunt but Lady Luck has never been his friend. On Hyper Racing Night at the Spirit Auto Center Speedway, Geordan Marerro raced to the win in the 600 Micro Sprint feature over former track champions, Matt Smith and Connor Gross, capturing the first Spirt win of his career.
Smith and Marerro made up the front row of the feature line-up, with Gross just one row back. As the field came to the green, Gross went to the bottom and came away with the lead at the start but by the time the field came around to complete lap number one, Marerro had his No. 01 out in front and he stayed there for twenty-five laps to capture the $500 winner’s paycheck.
Alex Swift returned to Victory Lane in the 270 Micro Sprints for win number three on the season. Christopher Laureigh raced to the win in the Speedway Entertainment All Star Slingshots for his third win in a season that has been dominated by the Laureigh brothers. Waylon Wolf raced third win in the Junior Slingshots. Andrew Ferriola raced to the win in the Junior Sprints in the first Spirit appearance of the season
Marerro’s race for the lead was the move of the race! After Gross slid up the inside to grab the lead on the start, Marerro went to the outside and he was surprised when the car stuck. Marerro had the lead as the filed crossed the stripe to score lap one. Dylan Kontra quickly took over second and set his sights on the leader. Kontra kept the pressure on and had a shot on a mid-race restart but Marerro prevailed. “This has been on my bucket list since Danny,” Marerro noted, thinking about Danny Serrano and how he traveled to other tracks to encourage drivers to come to Spirit.
Kontra finished second in his first appearance at Spirit this season followed by Gross, current point leader, Quinn Llewellyn and Matt Smith. Jeff Hartman finished sixth followed by Dan Leaper, Sam LaMothe, Matt Peck and Julian Rexrode.
Even the persistent mist that fell throughout the night could not dampen the spirits of the Marerro family has they celebrated this big win.
With Hyper Racing 600 Speedweek just two weeks away, teams are checking out the tracks that they may not have frequented this season.
Alex Swift started on the outside of front row by luck of the draw and then led every lap en route to his victory – the 56th of his career. Lee Nardelli chased Swift to the checkered followed by Nick Skias who made a great rebound for the second week in a row. Skias restarted at the rear of the field after being involved in a turn four incident early in the race, racing his way through the field to finish third. Dylan Pence and Mark Landwher rounded out the top five.
Last week’s winner, Billy Grey, again showed speed but was sidelined by mechanical issues while racing in third with just a few laps to go.
In the Laureigh brothers weekly contest in the All Star Slingshots, it was Christopher Laueigh who raced to the win after starting behind his brother in the feature line-up. Polesitter, Gage Marerro, younger brother to Geordan, raced out in front of the field for the first three laps. Christopher Laureigh took the lead on lap four but Marerro was not done yet. Jonathan Laureigh raced into third before halfway and tried everything he could to take over second but Marerro was not having it.
Unfortunately, Gavin Marerro, the third competitor in the family was plagued with mechanical issues.
Christopher Laureigh raced to his third win while Marerro finished second – his best effort to date. Jonathan Laureight finished third followed by Matthew Lashley and Charley Moore. William Evans III fiished sixth with Tyler Lillick, Nick Tomlinson, Riley McGuire and Austin Walls completed the top ten.
Waylon Wolf raced to his third win in the Junior Slingshots, winning three out of his last four races. Austin Pavia led the first five laps before Wolf took the lead. Hannah Kormann raced into second late in the race as she celebrated her fifteenth birthday. Pavia finished third for his best effort to date followed by David Morrison and Danica Weinberger.
Kylin Evans finished sixth with Logan Showers, Carl Taylor, Anna Strachko and Danny Kurtz rounding out the top ten.
In preparation for their appearance during 600 Speedweek, the Junior Sprints made their first race of the season at Spirit. Andrew Ferriola took the win over Braylon Morris and Logan Schibilia.
